The epistle to the Colossians exhorts us to set our affection on eternal things, to put on the eternal man, who is clothed with the eternal character, upon the eternal foundation of selfless love.
The epistle to the Colossians contains a tremendous revelation. Paul warns about men at four places in Col 2. Men deceive, spoil and judge. Col 2:10 says we are complete in Him. Christ has done a complete work in us, as He sees it.
Col 2:8 warns that we may be spoiled, be carried off into philosophy of men’s wisdom, after the traditions of men. The church now is spoiled. The root of “traditions of men” means to surrender one’s city. Cities are held in the balance now.
We have to have an eternal perspective. We want immediate results, that is a temporal perspective. Colossians 3:2 is the key:
Col 3:2 Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.
In three places, Paul says: “put on”.
Col 3:10 “And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:” put on the eternal man.
Col 3:12 “Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering;” put on the eternal character.
Col 3:14 “And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness.” Put on the eternal foundation.
“Put on” means to sink into a garment. When we put on those things, we are being mantled with what is eternal, and not what is temporal. In this hour, eternal mantles are coming forth for us to be mantled with eternal things. The Lord said: “The reason Keith Green’s life was effective is that he allowed me to mantle him with these three things.” His life was effective because he was mantled with what was eternal, not temporal.
You get an eternal mantle, not by chasing after someone else’s, but by allowing the Lord to bring it, so you are sunk into it. Then our righteousness begins to glow upon the earth. Men do not see your salvation, they see the righteousness which has been illuminated because of salvation in your heart. Now they see an eternal mantle.
